Ball Burnishing Services At Supersheen

Ball burnishing is a type of metal vibratory process that is used to produce a specific colour and lustre on a component. It is sometimes referred to as just burnishing, and utilises steel media to achieve the polished look on the component.

Most commonly relied on to achieve a bright and highly reflective surface, ball burnishing is one of the most mechanical metal finishing processes. With this in mind, it’s important that you enlist the help of a specialist ball burnishing company such as Supersheen if you’re considering it.

The Benefits Of Ball Burnishing

Burnishing offers more than just a polished shine to a component. Some common benefits of this metal finishing process include:

  • Strain Hardening – the ball burnishing process condenses the overall structure of a component and increases its hardness.
In fact, some components can have up to an 100% increase in hardness after undergoing ball burnishing. They will also be more resistant to fatigue failure.

  • Corrosion resistance – ball burnishing can reduce the roughness of a component. As a result, it will be less likely to develop cracks and imperfections that can lead to rust and other types of corrosion.

  • Polished finish – components that undergo ball burnishing will have a polished finish, enhancing their aesthetics and sometimes their overall value.

  • Short Cycle Time – ball brushing is adaptable for most components and manufacturing processes making it a hassle-free metal finishing service to invest in.

  • Aluminium

What is ball burnishing?

Burnishing is a metal finishing process used to polish and harden the surface of a component. Ball burnishing happens when metals are rubbed together forcefully over a period of time. Consequently, impacting the peaks of its surface profile.

What parts can undergo ball burnishing?

Along with the components listed above, some other examples of parts we work with include: stainless steel pressings and forgings, hot brass stampings and aluminium castings.

Is there a size limit for ball burnishing?

Different ball burnishing companies will have different capabilities, however here at Supersheen, we can work with components up to 450mm for the burnishing process.

About this Process

The ball burnishing process at Supersheen is most suitable for small to medium sized components. As mentioned above, it can be used on most metals and parts and at Supersheen there are two different types of burnishing.

Depending on the application, we can use either the barrel method or the vibratory method for ball burnishing. The vibratory method is the most common one and uses traditional heavy duty vibrators to excite the ball mass which then creates a burnished or pressurised finish to the product.
