Vibratory Polishing & Vibratory Finishing
A generic description given to processes employing equipment activated by vibrational forces. Vibratory finishing can be used for deburring and polishing, the methods used usually employ media, the name given to particles in the vibratory chamber, these can be ceramic pre-formed shapes incorporating abrasive particles or polishing agents, to achieve finishes on the metal components introduced into the media. The vibrational forces are achieved from an out of balance device rotating at 1,500 to 3,000 RPM being bolted to the vibratory bowl mounted on coil springs or rubber mounts. The result of the motor and spring arrangement will activate the media mass causing it to rotate within the vessel. This movement creates a “scrubbing” action enabling the media to attack the metal components, thereby removing metal and creating a deburring effect on sharp edges produced when machining or pressing metal components (vibro deburring). By changing the media for porcelain or stainless steel balls, it is possible to achieve bright polished finishes (vibro polishing).
Vibro finishing was first employed in the paint and pharmaceuticals industries in the 1950’s and 60’s where the use of vibratory machines, produced paint particles of micro fine size from natural minerals, to be finally dyed and suspended in a paint media, or in the case of pharmaceuticals they produced microfine particles of chalk based minerals to be blended with drugs to be formed into tablet form.
It therefore follows that Vibro Finishing evolved down this route, the first known example of using a vibratory mill to finish metal components came from the bicycle industry, who produced exceptional surface finishes on bicycles parts. This development led to design of the two basic forms of vibratory finishing machines as we know them today. The open trough and the circular bowl machines, and with the advance of the various media shapes in both ceramic and plastic, we have arrived at the vibro finishing process as we know it today.
